Quick story · start here
How can a redox reaction send electrons through a wire instead of transferring them directly in one container?
Separating the two half-reactions turns chemical driving force into an external electric current.

Oxidation releases electron density at the anode and reduction consumes electrons at the cathode. If the half-reactions are physically separated and connected through an external conductor, electrons can travel through that conductor from the anode toward the cathode.
