In the exponential model, each individual contributes the same average per-capita growth tendency, so a larger population produces a larger absolute change. If that assumption is extended indefinitely, the model predicts unbounded growth.

The logistic model introduces density limitation through a carrying-capacity parameter K. When population size N is small relative to K, growth resembles the exponential model; as N approaches K, the modeled net growth rate falls toward zero.

Population growth models relate population size to its rate of change; exponential growth assumes a constant per-capita growth rate, while the logistic model reduces growth as population approaches a carrying capacity.

What does carrying capacity change mathematically and conceptually in the logistic model?

The factor (1 − N/K) progressively reduces the exponential growth term as population size rises. It is close to 1 when N is far below K, becomes 0 at N = K, and is negative if the idealized model is evaluated above K.

Conceptually, that factor encodes density limitation in one parameter. It does not specify the biological mechanism, so the model must not be confused with a complete ecological explanation of why growth slows.
